ONE A La CarteRucola
Pylos is where you go when you want a deal and a table without waiting in line. Upon walking into Pylos you'll be struck by the massive number of huge ceramic jugs hanging from the ceiling. New York is a place where so much of the fun in dining out is being able to appreciate the attention to detail and interior decor of restaurants. While you brunch under this ceiling and sit in the cushion covered seats, you can't help feeling like you are in a little village in Greece.
What to Eat
The perk at Pylos is the $15 prix fixe menu. You'll receive a cocktail or juice, AND coffee or tea, AND your choice of any egg dish, sandwich, or waffle. Get the Greek Grilled Cheese Sandwich. It's kasseri Greek cheese, tomatoes, and pastourma (cured beef), all pan-fried and held together by pita bread. It's the perfect blend of cheese and bread for your hangover, and protein to make up for it. Don't miss the Greek Yogurt Parfait either. It's gorgeous to look at, and we love the multiple layers of rich yogurt and sweet fruit, topped with nuts and fresh mint.
What to Drink
With this rockin' price fix you have your choice of sparkling wine, mimosa, Kir Royal or fresh squeezed orange juice. We recommend the Kir Royal as it is a great drink that most brunch spots don't offer. It's a French cocktail, made with champagne and Créme de cassis. And, if you want additional cocktails, they are only $7 each-- way more reasonable than those double digit drinks offered elsewhere.
Reservations are accepted for parties of two or more.
Rucola will embrace you with its charm and warmth. We love the rustic decor, long wooden slats on the ceiling, and milk bottle chandeliers. The atmosphere is always comfortable but boisterous. The thing with brunch is (and one of the reasons BrunchCritic was started) is some restaurants have a great brunch, but subpar dinner, or a great dinner and a poor brunch. Rucola has nailed both. If you have a wait, that's why. But try sitting at the bar for extra attentive service.
What to Eat
The Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Sandwich topped with arugula and two farm eggs is a comfort food favorite, but the Nutella French Toast with banana and hazelnuts satisfies our sweet side. The dish is warm and decadent, and our general rule of thumb is, if there's Nutella on the menu, order it.
What to Drink
If you like spicy bloody Marys, Rucola has one for you to try. The house made mix has some bite, but is still rich with tomato, and topped with a green olive and lemon.
Reservations are accepted only for parties of 5 or more.
