French Louie

THE PLACE

French Louie is a French-American restaurant started by the same owner as the famous Buttermilk Channel. It has high expectations to meet, and does so indeed. Never mind the all too sparse interior decor, focus instead on the food, good ole comfort vibe, and excellent service. There's a good chance you'll see the owner Doug delivering dishes himself.

What to Eat

I literally had one of the best eggs scrambles here-- the Goat Cheese & Mushroom to be exact. You won't be disappointed. If you want sweet, they have Créme Brûlée French Toast. Come on, how can you not order that? For something more lunchie, French Louie offers a notable Trout Tartine, with Beets, Horseradish, Gribiche, and Rye Ficelle.

What to Drink

You must at least start with the Everything Mary made with Everything Bagel Infused Vodka, a Caraway Salt Rim and Bagel Crisp Garnish. Kudos to them for doing things a little different. The Hot Toddies aren't on the menu, but Andrew the bartender will certainly mix up a good one.

Maialino (@ the Gramercy Park Hotel)

THE PLACE

Maialino is a hard place not to like. It has a warm and inviting dining room that maintains a classy feel but is also accessible. It could be pretentious, but it's not. It is just a solid brunch spot. Maialino is great for groups, impressing friends and family, and I love the round tables. No matter where you sit, you aren't on top of the table next to you which is a problem many NYC restaurants have. It's been a Founders Favorite ever since BrunchCritic started. Just go there.

What to Eat

Get the Pecan Toffee Glazed Brioche Bun to start, and then move onto the Eggs Contadino which is Poached Eggs, Roasted Delicata Squash, and Brussels Sprouts. If you want something more meaty, the Roasted Pork and Fried Egg Sandwich is the way to go.

What to Drink

As some of you may know, I'm partial to the Aperol Spritz, as I was Aperol's Chief Brunch Officer over the summer. Maialino makes it right, (3 parts Prosecco, 2 parts Aperol, 1 part soda water.)
