ONE in AstoriaGastroteca
Greenwich Project offers one of the best prix fixes in town and really represents value. For $25 you'll receive scones & muffins to start, an entree, coffee or tea, and a cocktail. Inside you'll notice that the different colored mugs that are placed at each seat, black and white framed photos, and large brick walls give Greenwich Project a cozy feel. This 74-seat restaurant sits inside a townhouse, and I recommend the upstairs section for large events like baby/bridal showers or birthday celebrations.
What to Eat
For your starter pastry, opt for the cinnamon scone and definitely layer on the strawberry butter it is served with. For an entree, go with the huge plate of Lemon Ricotta Pancakes with Berry Compote. The hash could have a lot more Pork Belly in it, so instead order the Goat Cheese Omelette or the Truffle Egg Salad.
What to Drink
There are a ton of fun cocktails on the menu, and you get one included with the prix fixe. The Garden Bloody Mary is a fresh take on a traditional Bloody, as it has red pepper, basil, and mint in it. Totally different. Totally awesome. The What's Up Doc is a "healthy cocktail" and has fresh carrot and celery juice, ginger, orange bitters and vodka.
Brunch reservations are accepted.
Gastroteca is a terrific Italian restaurant nestled on a quite corner in Astoria. I love the rustic interior and bright light that comes through the extra large windows. For those with flexible schedules, weekday brunch is offered Monday through Friday (in addition to weekend brunch). Gastroteca will be fully open this Memorial Day Monday, so head on over and snag a spot in their outdoor seating.
What to Eat
While a lot of brunch spots make eggs benedict, not all are good at it. Here, the real standouts are the Benedicts, as well as the Nutella Stuffed French Toast. The french toast is lightly covered in a Corn Flake Crust and it's basically crack on a plate. For the Benedicts, opt for the California Benedict with Basil, Avocado, and Roasted Tomato, or the Italian Benedict with Prosciutto and a Tomato Hollandaise. Both are served with a hefty amount of potatoes that are crispy on the outside, and soft in the middle.
What to Drink
I highly recommend you order the Freddy bloody Mary with house infused jalepeno vodka and garlic. It's got balance, and is one of the best I've had in a long time. I'm currently adding it to my "best of" list.
Brunch reservations are accepted for all party sizes.
