New York is getting good at being specific. We have Empire Biscuit for Biscuits, Egg Shop for Eggs, and now B.E.C for breakfast sandwiches (served all day). B.E.C is worth the trip even if you don't live in Chelsea. The interior is bright and friendly and has been constructed with thought and care. The benches are reclaimed wood from the Coney Island Boardwalk post Hurricane Sandy, and the outside facade is made of wood from the old South St. Seaport from long ago.
What to Eat
Each sandwich is unlike any other breakfast sandwich you've ever had. These are bigger, tastier, and made with fresher ingredients-- most from New York State. The sandwiches are more complex as well. For instance, the Farmhouse is made with Crispy Pancetta, Ricotta Cheese, Honey and Baby Spinach, and the Spicy Spaniard is Serrano Ham, Manchego Cheese, Pickled Jalapeños and Tomato Compote.
What to Drink
You'll delight in the Arnold Palmer and Saranac hand crafted Root Beer and Orange Cream. For those extra hungover people, hot & cold brew by Brookyln Coffee Company is offered as well.
Brunch reservations are not accepted. It's an order at the counter, sit wherever you want type of place.
Union Bar & Kitchen
Union Bar & Kitchen is a modern, comfortable restaurant & bar, located in that funky area between Tribeca, SoHo and the West Village. (What are we calling it these days? SoHo West? Lower WV? I digress...) It has a great prix fixe, and is decorated with a high ceiling, cool chandeliers, and quirky art on the walls.
What to Eat
What's really nice about this spot, in addition to the prix fixe, is it has a small plates section on the menu. At brunch time, our eyes are often bigger than our stomachs, but with the small plates, you can try both sweet and savory and not end up being overly full. The Mini Eggs Benedict, Petite French Toast Sandwich, Bacon Wrapped Asparagus, Stuffed Portobello, and Silver Dollar pancakes are the perfect size for you to sample a lot of deliciousness when you don't want to limit yourself to one dish.
What to Drink
Union Bar & Kitchen's (optional) prix fixe is $33 and includes one Main Dish, one Side Dish and Unlimited Bloody Marys, Mimosas and Bellinis for 2 hours. After running the numbers, I've been to and reviewed over 350 brunch spots, have 1,100 listings in the BrunchCritic database, and can tell you that this is a good deal. Bring a large group, celebrate a birthday or bridal shower and have at it.
